Formation of Spanish Riding School Horses and Riders |
Me with a horse when I was a toddler. Just like mom said. |
Bundled in down coats, winter boots, hats and scarves, my family was rosy cheeked from the cold as we rushed through the festive Christmas Markets. My own giddy excitement was tempered with worries that my family would not appreciate the show.My girls ride some, but I am the only real horse addict of my group, having started riding at age 7 and dabbling in everything from barrel racing to western pleasure. The dancing white horses were always in the back of my mind and by the time I was a teenager, I knew that dressage was the sport for me.
I started thinking about what would make the show most enjoyable.I decided that the most important criteria were if the historical significance of the
school and horses was explained, if the venue lived up to its purported beauty
and whether the performance was all that it was said to be. If these things lived up to expectations, I knew my
family would enjoy the experience as well.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Spanish Riding School and the Lipizzaner breed
have long enduring histories. Built from 1729-1735, by Josef
Emanuel Fischer Von Erlach, at the commission of Emperor Karl VI, the Winter
Riding School stands where Imperial riding arenas have stood since1565(Spanish Riding School [SRS],n.d.). According to the Encyclopedia Brittannica, "it is the only remaining institution where haute ecole ("high school") riding and training are exclusively practiced, much as they were in the 18th century"(2013).
The Quadrille is the finale. I
have done a tiny bit of quadrille for fun, and can attest to how difficult it
is to get at least eight horses to move in unison. The quadrille is 20 minutes
of choreographed perfection. It is a sight to behold. From my vantage
point, I could hear the footfall of these beautiful creatures as they approached,
muscles rippling under glistening white hair. I was so close, that I could feel
their warm breath as they passed by. Bertran G. of Basel Switzerland says
"I'm not much of an equestrian fan, but I really enjoyed this. It's truly amazing
what the Lipizzaner can do, bravo !"(TripAdvisor, Nov. 27,
2012).
The Kapriole was the clear crowd favourite and the audience went wild
when a stallion leapt off the ground with all four feet, then with front legs
tucked beneath him, explosively kicked out with his hind legs. While I was impressed by the move, I was blown away when I realized that his rider (and in
fact, all of the riders now in the arena) had no stirrups. This is an
extraordinary display of horsemanship and I was awed. The Spanish riding school
program explains that “the rider’s seat must be perfect and in total balance,
as the Levades, Courbettes and Kaprioles are always ridden without
stirrup”(SHBP,2012).

The Lipizzaner has graced the Imperial court since the breed's foundation in
1580. The Lipizzaner was bred in the current day Slovenia town of Lipica
(formerly Lipizza), using Spanish horses (hence the name Spanish Riding
School). Selective breeding has created the white horses that we now associate
with the breed. The stallions that perform at the Spanish Riding School are
direct decedents of the horses that first came to the Imperial Court
in the 1500's (SRS,n.d.).
The Hofburg Palace. The Spanish Riding School is tucked away in this magnificent complex. |
Some
historical information was shared during the performance, but probably not
enough to make a huge impact on those that come with little or no prior
knowledge. I wish that the announcements gave more of the colourful history
of the riding school and the horses that grace it. It is remarkable when you
realize that this institution has survived the Turkish Wars, and two World
Wars (SRS,n.d.).

VENUE: The venue easily lived up to expectation. Tucked away in the expansive
Hofburg Palace, it is at the heart of historic Vienna. As we entered the
Winter Riding School, I was awestruck by the beauty. The school is a gorgeous
monochromatic palate of taupe and greys. Enormous, crystal laden chandeliers
hung from the ceiling, sparkling in the light. The arena looked more like a
ballroom than a riding arena. Two rows of balconies circled the area, separated
by majestic Corinthian columns. The ceilings curved gracefully inward and
were covered with beautiful, but subtle designs. At the center of the arena,
the twin piaffe pillars rose from the arena floor, the red and white Austrian
flags atop, the only burst of bright color in the room.

The air was crisp as we found our
seats and settled in to admire the surroundings. After much anticipation, the
sound system crackled to life and the announcements began, first in German,
then English. Unfortunately no photos are allowed to be taken during the
performance.

THE PERFORMANCE:
For the performance, I was focused on the overall appearance of the horses and riders and the quality of their work.
For the performance, I was focused on the overall appearance of the horses and riders and the quality of their work.
The riders were resplendent in their traditional
uniforms. Chocolate brown frock coats, glossy black boots extending over their
knees, and their distinctive bi cornered black hats were all immaculate.
The horses: You will not see a speck of dirt on the Lipizzaner stallions as they
perform in Vienna. Every single stallion that entered the arena was gleaming brilliantly
without a hair out of place. These horses are practically luminescent.
Try not to be blinded by the shimmering white horses and their sparkling brass tack |
Quality of the work: Here is where
things can get a little subjective. Horse people and dressage riders in
particular, will be looking for different things than the average Joe off the
street.
One negative review on Trip Advisor, caught my eye. AlisaVilshansky of Tel Aviv, Israel thinks that the show is a “complete waste of time and money.” She goes on to explain why this is so.
To me it seemed like all along the show the horses
were doing the same routine (slightly prancing with
elegance). They didn't do any 'horse moves' such as
jumping over fences, just walking around the stage,
very slowly. Every once in a while one of them per-
formed some kind of a 'kick' with its legs or stood
on its back legs for a second(Jan.2,2013).

If you read about the Spanish Riding School, you will learn very quickly
that they perform classical dressage. They are not show jumpers or circus
animals. If that is what you want to see, this show is not for you. Trust me,
these horses do much more than walk elegantly around the arena, although they
do so beautifully.
The Quadrille as seen from above. |
The performance is broken down into eight acts that feature everything
from young stallions with just one or two years training, through the seasoned
pros. We get to see how the horses are worked from the ground as well as
ridden. Highlights are the synchronized acts of Pas de Duex and Quadrille and Schools Above the Ground. All the acts are set to beautiful classical music,
featuring Mozart, Chopin, Haydn, Schubert and others.
Pas de Deux retrieved from www.srs.at |
In the Pas de Deux, two
exquisitely groomed stallions dance through the arena, perfectly mirroring each
other at all times. The brass of their tack sparkles in the light and not a
stitch appears out of place on the rider’s habit. Their work is flawless and
even non horse people can appreciate the precision and beauty. Horse people
will appreciate that they are performing all of the most difficult dressage
movements with ease.

More Quadrille |
The highlight of the show for non-horse riders would probably be the Schools Above the Ground. “Only very few stallions qualify for lessons
of the Schools above the Ground. Next to physical strength, a strong will and
high willingness to learn are the prerequisites to these challenges. And
ultimately only very special horses are qualified for presentations as solo
horses, either on the long rein or under the rider in the Steps and Movements
of the High School- the crowning achievement of an absolute star”(Spanische Hofreitschule Bundesgestut Piper[SHBP],2012).

The
results : my family
was not disappointed. If you go with an understanding of what you will be seeing,
I doubt you will be either. The historical significance of the Spanish Riding
School, adds to the performance, but it is best to come with some prior
knowledge. Do a little homework ahead of time, or splurge on the program. The
venue itself is amazing and can be appreciated by all.The quality of the performance is incredible, but without
explanations of the amount of training required or the actual difficulty of the
moves, it may be underwhelming to non-horse people. For horse people,
especially dressage riders, the performance is unparalleled. I had enjoyed all of my previous Lipizzaner performances, but the Spanish Riding School stands alone on a completely different level of beauty and perfection.
NHtoFL,
of Englewood, Florida said "I know nothing about horses and at $50 I
thought the tickets were a little high, but this was the best "take"
of my four days in Vienna. The control the riders have over the horses is
incredible" (November 5,2012).
As for me, I hope to go back some day and get a tour of the stables and view another performance. Maybe I will see you there.
